A career in Music
Prof was a member of the Rhymesayers’ Welcome to Minnesota tour in 2010. Prof and his sidekick and hype guy Rahzwell used to perform often at the Dinkytowner bar in the mid-2000s. Prof would meet his manager, Mike Campbell, at one of these shows. Prof and Campbell then co-founded the Stophouse Music Group with Dillon Parker, a record label that owns and operates the namesake Stophouse Studios in northeast Minneapolis.
Prof was voted Minnesota’s 19th-best rapper by City Pages in 2012, citing his musical proficiency, “amazing singing voice,” and ability to engage and make audiences laugh as reasons.
Prof’s 2011 album, King Gampo, was described by musician and reviewer Dwight Hobbes of the Twin Cities Daily Planet as “asinine, narcissistic self-indulgence run utterly amok, without a shred of redeeming artistry” and “rap at its worst.”
Prof is one of the few Minneapolis rap groups capable of selling out the city’s legendary First Avenue Mainroom (together with Doomtree and many Rhymesayers artists), and the only one to do so in recent years without the support of Minnesota Public Radio station 89.3 The Current.
Prof filled in for Busta Rhymes at the Soundset Music Festival in Shakopee, Minnesota, when he was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict.
Prof joined Rhymesayers Entertainment on December 3, 2013.
Slug, the label’s co-founder, was featured in the introduction video, which was released alongside the tune “The Reply.” Prof would release a new album in 2014, according to the Star Tribune at the time.
Prof launched his debut album, Liability, via Rhymesayers in May 2015. He also disclosed in the same interview that he has signed with William Morris Endeavor for his future touring endeavors. Prof released a single off the album called “Ghost.” Liability debuted on October 16, 2015, and reached number 141 on the Billboard 200 list on November 7, 2015.
Prof revealed on February 20, 2018, that his next album, Pookie Baby, would be released on April 13, 2018. Prof debuted a music video for his song “Cousins,” which features Saint Paul, Minnesota rapper Cashinova, on September 6, 2019.
