Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest reigning monarch, died at the age of 96. She ruled for 70 years. According to centuries of precedent, her eldest son, Charles, 73, has succeeded as king.
The royal family has assembled at her Balmoral home in the Scottish highlands, where she spent her final days, including King Charles, grandchildren William and Harry, and their families.
In June, the United Kingdom celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the country. Queen Elizabeth surpassed her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria as the longest-serving British monarch in 2015.
She became the world’s second-longest reigning monarch this year. As the United Kingdom celebrated her Platinum Jubilee with royal parades, street celebrations, and spectacle, the Queen thanked the people in a letter, stating she was “humbled and greatly touched.”
She wrote,
“There is no manual to follow when it comes to celebrating your Queen’s 70th birthday. It truly is a first “.
Because of her health, the Queen was unable to attend several of the ceremonies, but Prince Charles and second in line Prince William did.
She did appear at the end of the Jubilee Pageant on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
She was the only monarch most of her subjects had ever known, appearing on stamps, banknotes, and coins and immortalized in popular culture.
Elizabeth witnessed some of the most high-profile royal scandals, including Charles and Diana’s divorce, her second son Prince Andrew’s potential links to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, and Harry and Meghan leaving the royal family.
She did, however, witness some of the most dramatic events in modern history, including the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy, the moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the Covid pandemic.
During her tenure, she had 14 Prime Ministers, ranging from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss. She initially appointed Liz Truss in Balmoral, Scotland, since she was too unwell to return to London.
Her 73-year-old husband, Prince Philip, died in April 2021, only weeks shy of his 100th birthday. Due to the COVID procedure, an image of the Queen sitting alone in the quire of St. George’s Chapel during his funeral moved the globe.
