Rapper NO:EL Found Guilty And Convicted To Three Years In Prison

NO: EL, a South Korean rapper, was found guilty of several offenses, including assaulting a police officer and driving while intoxicated, and was given a three-year prison sentence.

The rapper’s real name is Jang Yong-jun, and he is well-known but also notorious in the South Korean rap scene. NO: With the release of the album ELLEONOEL, EL made his debut.

NO:EL is, however, arguably most known for being the son of politician Chang Je-won, a sitting Member of the National Assembly for the United Future Party.

NO: EL was detained for a number of offenses, including assaulting a police officer and driving without a license.

The rapper was seen driving his car on September 18, 2021, in the Banpo-dong neighborhood of Seoul, before he slammed with another car.

NO:EL allegedly proceeded to headbutt a responding police officer after being initially charged with driving without a license, refusing to submit to breathalyzer tests, and interfering with the performance of official duties. This apparently led to a further charge.

Furthermore, the rapper was already under probation for a prior DUI offense from the previous year. On February 25, 2022, the case was heard in Seoul Central District Court. The prosecution asked for a term of at least three years in prison for the rapper during the hearing, saying,

“The defendant committed another felony while he was on probation for DUI.”

Rapper issued an apology in September 2021

A black box video of the collision and the rapper’s following encounter with police was made public soon after the incident. NO: The footage shows EL arguing with the police before headbutting the officer in charge. The incident further damaged the rapper’s already poor public image, so he posted an apology on his Instagram story. According to the rapper, on September 19, 2021:

“I don’t know what to say. I’ll take all the punishment that’s coming my way and put in a lot of effort to improve as a person and a contributing member of society. I sincerely apologize to each and every one of my fans as well as to all the other people who may have been injured by my actions.

Additionally, NO: EL’s 2019 DUI did not result in any jail time, shocking the Korean public. Only an 18-month suspended sentence and two years of probation were given to the rapper for his DUI. At the time, a lot of people believed that the rapper’s prominent father was responsible for the lighter punishment.
