Ray Evernham- Professional Career

Before becoming a crew chief, Evernham was a modified driver in NASCAR’s Modified Division, which is still owned and administered by NASCAR. He was engaged as a chassis specialist by the International Race of Champions (IROC) at the age of 26. He was really effective at it because he could communicate the concerns that drivers had with the control of the car.

Evernham was involved in a crash at Flemington Speedway in the middle of the 1991 season. The accident had a significant influence on him. It caused damage to his brain stem, impairing his depth perception. Later in an interview, he stated that he was dissatisfied with his driving performance and that he was pushing himself too hard. His mishap spurred officials to place foam blocks in the track’s corners to cushion the impact.

Evernham began working for NASCAR driver Alan Kulwicki at the end of 1991, but things weren’t going so well since they were bickering. He was about to leave the garage when he was stopped by Ford engineers Lee Morse and Preston Miller, who had a chance for him. In the Ford team, he was reunited with Jeff Gordon, with whom he had previously worked in 1990. Evernham was doing chassis work for Gordon’s Pontiac team at the time.

He stayed on as Gordon’s crew chief once he moved up to the Winston Cup Series for Hendrick Motorsports from 1992 through 1999. Evernham and Gordon won 47 Cup races, three Cup championships, and were the dominant NASCAR team at the time. He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2018 for his service as a crew chief. Ray Evernham was the pit crew chief for the ‘Rainbow Warriors,’ so named because of their bright DuPont Automotive Finishes. Evernham is regarded as one of the pioneers in extending the time and efficiency of a pit stop. Rather than a team of mechanics, Evernham was known for employing a team of specialists who were taught to perfect their respective tasks.

Ray Evernham has also been on television several times, mostly as an analyst. He has worked for ESPN and ABC three times: once in 2000, once from 2008 to 2010, and once again from 2012 to 2013. Since 2013, he has also hosted AmeriCARnaon Velocity.
