Ray Shulman, the legendary progressive rock band Gentle Giant’s guitarist and co-founder, died recently at the age of 73. He died in London on March 30, after a long illness. Ray’s brother and bandmate, Derek Shulman, confirmed the news on Facebook.
According to Derek:
“It is with great sadness that I inform you that Ray Shulman, my younger brother and best friend, died on March 30th at his home in London.” I stayed with him until the end as he battled a long illness. At the very least, I know he’s at ease now.”
Ray Shulman’s death came as a shock to fans and music enthusiasts all over the world. His wife, Barbara Tanner, his older brother, Philip, and his bandmate, Derek Shubhman, survive him.

Ray Shulman began his career in the mid-1960s as a member of Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. Shulman contributed vocals, bass guitar, and fiddle to the ensemble. After Simon Dupree and the Big Sound disbanded in 1969, Shulman and his companions, his siblings Derek and Phil, formed Gentle Giant.
The band’s second album, Gentle Giant, was released in 1970, and they quickly established themselves as one of the most creative and artistically daring acts of the time. Their music included elements of rock, classical, jazz, and folk, as well as complicated time signatures, elaborate vocal harmonies, and virtuoso instrumental performances.
Shulman sang backup and lead vocals on many of the band’s songs, in addition to playing bass, fiddle, and a variety of other instruments.
