How did Ray Stevens start his Professional Career?

Ray Stevens’ early influences were the radio and jukebox at the village swimming pool, where he and the majority of the other kids spent their summers. Radio stations back then were extremely diverse, broadcasting music of all genres. As a result of this, Ray was exposed to a wide range of music, as well as the records played by the jukebox.

Ray became interested in music at the age of seven and began taking piano lessons. Ray had absorbed many of the great Southern musical influences by the time he was a teenager in Albany, Georgia. He experimented with various styles, ranging from country to rhythm and blues.

Ray began singing and playing piano in a band called the Barons when he was fifteen, and they performed for the American Legion, the Elks, private parties, and whatever else came up.He did so at the now-legendary RCA “B” studio. During this trip, he met Chet Atkins, RCA’s A&R director. They became lifelong friends. Ray’s first single was a huge success in Atlanta.

Ray Stevens soon left Prep Records to join Capitol. Its parent company is Capitol. He recorded some songs for Capitol Records in 1958. Bill Lowery established the National Recording Corporation during this period (NRC).

NRC had a small practice and recording studio that wasn’t particularly cutting-edge, but it was adequate for practice and recording. Ray, Jerry Reed, and Joe South, to name a few, were regulars, bugging the engineer to let them record.
