November 2024 is the planned launch date for Artemis 2 (formerly known as Artemis II) on the Space Launch System (SLS). It is the first crewed flight of the Orion spacecraft and the second mission of NASA’s Artemis program.
Three of the four astronauts on board the Artemis 2 will be the first women, people of color, and non-Americans to travel outside of low Earth orbit.
The astronauts include Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and Reid Wiseman of NASA.
Gregory Reid Wiseman, a well-known Navy test pilot and aviator, was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2009 for the first time. His first experience in orbit was in 2014, when he spent 165 days aboard the International orbit Station. He is a native of Baltimore, Maryland.
Wiseman most recently led the astronaut office before retiring in November 2022, making him suitable for a flying duty. Wiseman will lead the Artemis II mission as commander.

Reid received his commission through the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) after earning his degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1997. Reid then proceeded to the Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida for his flight training.
During his second tour in 2003, he was selected to enroll in the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School (NTPS) at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, with NTPS Class 125.
After graduation in June 2004, Gregory joined the Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Two Three (VX-23) at NAS Patuxent River as a Test Pilot and Project Officer.
In order to transition to the F-14 Tomcat, he reported to Fighter Squadron 101 at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, after being promoted to Naval Aviator in 1999.
In June 2009, NASA selected Reid Wiseman as one of nine candidates for the 20th astronaut class. At the Johnson Space Center, he started his astronaut training in August 2009 and finished it in May 2011.
At the time, he served as a pilot with Strike Fighter Squadron 103 aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), which was stationed at NAS Oceana in Virginia. Reid Wiseman was a lieutenant commander in the US Navy.
Wiseman said that as a young boy, he regularly saw the US Navy’s “Blue Angels” performances. In 2001, after seeing a Space Shuttle launch firsthand, he developed a great desire to become an astronaut.
Reid Wiseman will serve as the mission’s commander. After the Apollo program, this will be NASA’s first crewed lunar orbital mission in well than 50 years.
On December 18, 2020, he was chosen to lead the astronaut office of NASA. However, Wiseman left this position in December 2022, and until Joseph Acaba took up as Chief in February 2023, his deputy Drew Feustel served as acting chief.
