How Did She Die And What Happened To Her?
In 1953, complications from one of Kahlo’s many surgeries led to the amputation of her leg from the knee down.
Due in large part to her heavy drinking and painkiller usage, Kahlo’s health deteriorated as she got older. Over the course of her last days, Kahlo’s condition steadily deteriorated.
Her last painting, Self-Portrait Inside a Sunflower (1954), demonstrates her dwindling energy since it lacks the precise brushstrokes that often distinguish her work.
But Kahlo kept working right up to the very end.
A few days before to her death, Kahlo mustered the strength to use a wheelchair and go to a demonstration against the CIA-backed coup against Jacobo Arbenz, the democratically elected president of Guatemala.
A few days after the demonstration, on July 13, 1954, Kahlo died at the age of 47. Although Frida Kahlo’s official cause of death was listed as a pulmonary embolism, there are still unanswered issues.
The quick cremation and inconclusive autopsy left her actual cause of death a mystery.
Frida Kahlo’s Early Life
Drawing at an early age, Kahlo learned how to sketch from printer Fernando Fernández, recording her drawings in sketchbooks.
In 1925, she began working outside of the classroom to help support her family. Before beginning a paid apprenticeship in engraving with Fernández, she worked for a short time as a stenographer.
He was astounded by her skill, even if at the time she did not see painting as a career. When Kahlo was eighteen, she was badly hurt on a bus, and she has suffered from chronic pain ever since.
After suffering the accident, Kahlo had to stay in bed for three months before she could resume painting. She started to consider a career as a medical illustrator, which would allow her to combine her artistic and scientific abilities.
Her mother provided her with a specially made easel so she could paint in bed, and her father lent her some of his oil paints. She had a mirror over the easel so she could see herself.
