On June 26, 1963, Richard Channing Garfield was born in Philadelphia. He spent his early years around the world because his father was an architect.

When Garfield was twelve years old, his family relocated to Oregon. Former US President James A. Garfield was his great-great-grandfather, and his grandpa was the inventor of the paper clip. His nephew Fay Jones, who is also a well-known illustrator, created the artwork for one of the Magic cards.

Since he was young, Garfield has enjoyed puzzles and games, but it wasn’t until he discovered the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons that he truly fell in love with gaming. He made his debut game when he was 13 years old.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in computational mathematics in 1985. After receiving his diploma, Garfield started working at Bell Laboratories. He enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania to seek a Ph.D. in combinatorial mathematics since he still felt the need to continue his studies. Soon after, he was appointed to Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, to teach mathematics.

In a week, he completed the game and submitted it for review by the publishers. Magic: The Gathering, the first trading card game published in 1993, was created by Garfield by fusing the concepts of an existing game and the card game “Five Magics,” which was influenced by Cosmic Encounter.

Additionally, Garfield started working alone on additional packs. He started working for Wizard of the Coast as a full-time game designer the following year. He created a strong tournament system for the game while balancing the needs of the company with the needs of the players.

In 1994, he released Garfield’s RoboRally, which was favorably appreciated by the public. His CCG game based on Vampire: The Masquerade, Jihad, was released in the same year but eventually modified to Vampire: The Eternal Struggle to appease Muslims.

Based on Garfield’s idea, the game publisher Wizard of the Coast released the BattleTech Collectible Card Game in 1996. Additionally, he participated in the major playtesting for the 2000 release of Dungeons & Dragon’s third edition.

Later, he quit Wizards to become a freelance game creator. His most recent indie games were Pecking Order (2006) and Rockville (2006). (2006). He has since moved his attention to video games, working on the creation of games like Schizoid and Spectromancer.
