In an episode of the PBS program Finding Your Roots, the actor learned a terrifying family truth. He learned that one of his business associates, who was allegedly seeking to cash in on an insurance policy, killed his great-grandfather, Hyman Berson, in 1933.
Later, the murderer was found not guilty, and no one else was ever put on trial. Alvin Berson, Kind’s grandpa, was a highly moral but harsh guy, and it’s possible that this tragedy had an impact on his attitude.
Kind claimed that until discovering his genealogy, he had never been able to comprehend his grandfather’s grave manner.
According to Today, the actor’s great-grandfather, Hyman Berson, immigrated to the country and managed a pedlar business on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
