Rico Roman, a 41-year-old Oregon resident, is a former Army Staff Sergeant and professional ice sled hockey player. He is from Portland and took part in the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.

Rico Roman, born on February 4, 1981, is of American Mexican origin. He finished his elementary school at Alpha High School in 2000. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Army. He was on duty and served in Iraq when he had his left leg amputated by an IED in February 2007. After suffering a significant loss as a result of the injury, one of the operation’s comfort staff suggested Roman join the San Antonio Rampage sled hockey team.
So he joined the club and began playing for it, developing his build-up career in sled hockey from 2009 to 2011. He was raised with two brothers, Benito and Carlos, as the son of Connie Roman. Rico’s left leg was amputated above the knee after he retired from the Army. He has been awarded the Purple Heart. He was introduced to hockey in 2008 by Operation Comfort, a non-profit group dedicated to supporting injured members of the United States military at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Rico is a happily married man who has been married to his beautiful and loving wife, Nathalie Roman. His wife supported him both during his success and during the difficult times when he lost his leg in an explosion while performing duties in Iraq. Within a year, Roman had mastered his prosthetic leg and was able to walk or even work while suffering from the condition. Today, he is a father, a Paralympian, and a retired army officer with plenty of time to succeed in life. Roman is the delighted father of two children, Juliet (eight) and Raul (eight) (6).
Rico Roman- Professional Career
Rico Roman joined the big league hockey team in 2009 and has remained with the squad ever since, practicing and playing. Cycling, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair football were all introduced to him. Within a year of his amputation, Roman was able to achieve and maintain his sports career while biking for two marathons, where he rode 150 miles in a day to raise money for multiple sclerosis research. Rico Roman, a Purple Heart recipient, made his debut with the United States national sled hockey team in 2011 and later earned a spot on the first Paralympic Team in 2014.
Rico joined the Dallas Stars in 2012 when he was given the opportunity to perform and win the USA Hockey Sled Championship Classic Division A. From 2011 to the present, he has served as a member of the United States National Sled Hockey Team, and he is a one-time winner of the USA Hockey Sled Cup. Rico won the silver medal in the IPC World Sled Hockey Challenge in November 2011, then the gold medal the following year, followed by the silver medal in 2013. He received a gold medal in 2012 after winning the International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship, and a silver medal the following year in the same position.
Rise to Fame
Rico was not a fan of the game before starting to play sled hockey. He used to wonder if Hispanics played the game or not. Even in his interview, he stated that he is a member of the Oregon Ducks, not the hockey team, and that he is unlikely to represent the hockey team. Rico won another gold medal in his paralympic event at Sochi in 2014. He has received three gold medals (2012, 2019, 2021) and two silver medals (2013, 2017) while competing with the sled hockey team in world championships. Despite this, he has remained a three-time Paralympian, beginning with a gold medal with his US team in 2014, followed by another gold medal in the 2018 Paralympics.
