Robert had already met his musical idols, including Freddie King, Albert Collins, and Muddy Waters, in concert by age 20. Their performances inspired him to continue performing music, so he formed another ensemble in college and began touring the West Coast.

Robert Cray also contributed uncredited music to other blues ensembles. 1980 saw the release of Cray’s debut album, “Who’s Been Talkin’,”

on Tomato Records. The turning point in Robert Cray’s career was his fourth album, “Strong Persuader,” which was published in 1986 and for which he won a Grammy Award.
