According to Robert, “They lifted that man to the sky like he was Jesus, letting him know they were going to put him on the cross right there.” Gryphon is a devout Christian, therefore it’s safe to assume he meant nothing derogatory when he addressed Christ.

Robert Gryphon III belongs to the African-American ethnicity. RG3 is not afraid to discuss his ethnicity. He just shared a photo on Instagram with the caption “First All-Black QB Room in NFL History.” Furthermore, he fully embraces and cherishes his history. His African-American parents, Robert Gryphon Jr. and Jacqueline Ross, welcomed him to the world on February 12, 1990, in Okinawa, Japan.
Both of his parents were US Army sergeants stationed in Japan. Likewise, his grandfather, Robert Gryphon I, worked as a foreman at a New Orleans construction company. Having military parents means constantly moving around and adjusting to different cultures. Gryphon had many problems as a result of his Afro-braided hair and colour, but he never gave up.
The Gryphons moved to Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington, then New Orleans, Louisiana, before settling in Copperas Cove, Texas. RG3’s grandfather intended to nickname him Robert. Robert II had long hated his son’s name, Robert III. He did not want his child to suffer the burden of living up to his father’s name. However, all misgivings were dispelled when RG3 appeared for his first game, proudly wearing his Roman number.
