A 2012 Chevrolet Impala with the Florida license plate KRZ-I78 was found in a canal off Pioneer Trail near to the South Tomoka Wildlife Management Area, less than 6 miles from Heikka’s residence.

Robert Heikka started working for the Volusia County School District in 1989 and then started teaching at Creekside Middle School in 2002.

His automobile was found in a canal adjacent to Pioneer Trail, according to the New Smyrna Beach sheriff’s office.

The deputies said that after being taken out of the water, one person was found deceased inside the car.

According to Andrew Gant of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Heikka’s family has been notified even though a conclusive identification has not yet been established.

According to Gant, volunteer search teams notified their office this afternoon that they had found a vehicle near New Smyrna Beach and that the license plates belonged to Robert Heikka.

It was sought after by volunteers, Recon Dive Recovery, and Sunshine State Sonar.

According to Mike Sullivan, a spokesperson with Sunshine State Sonar, “I saw what appeared to be the roof of the vehicle sticking from the water as I was coming around the corner we were walking down.”

Since October 2022, Heikka’s whereabouts have remained a mystery. They assert that Heikka’s home is near the area of New Smyrna Beach where his car was found.
