2009 saw Hendersonville, North Carolina native Robert Livingston receive his degree from the College of William and Mary. Before becoming a safety coach, Livingston, 35, was a safety player. Robert was an unorganized student in high school. After a year and a half at Hun School (in New Jersey), he enrolled at Michigan for a year and a half.
In the end, he received his Hendersonville High School diploma. Livingston served as an assistant coach at William & Mary for a year following his graduation from college before taking a position at Furman. He served in the same role as coach at Vanderbilt University a year later.
It’s clear from Robert’s remarks made throughout his playing career that others around him recognized his coaching ability. Robert received praise from William & Mary’s defensive coordinator, Bob Shoop, in a 2009 interview. “It’s best to say that Rob is a student of the game,” Shoop remarked. After he graduates, I think he will have a great chance to work at the personnel level in the game.
Livingston stated in the interview that he has always aspired to be a scout or work in the front offices of an NFL team. If it failed, he wanted to become a coach in some capacity. In 2012, Livingston got what he wanted. He was employed by the Cincinnati Bengals as a scout. His coverage area was the Southeast, specifically the ACC and SEC.
Robert started working as a defensive quality control and special teams assistant three years later. He joined the Bengals in 2016 as an assistant defensive backs coach, and the following season, he was promoted to secondary coach. Robert was a safeties/secondary coach for the previous seven years before coming to Colorado.

The sole child of Rutledge and Beth Pugh Livingston is Robert. Robert, his grandfather, was a Hendersonville football player. Rutledge played football at Hendersonville before enrolling at Clemson, continuing his father’s legacy. Rutledge is a real estate professional instead of a football coach, unlike his son.
Additionally, he was Lake Keowee’s Director of Sales. Rutledge’s company built a half-size football field in 2016 so fans could support the Clemson Tigers against the Crimson Tide with a “Tiger Paw” insignia. Rutledge issued a statement stating, “We wanted to find a unique way to show our support while the football team is on a truly historic run because we have such a strong relationship with the university.”
