Robert W. Smith was born on October 24, 1958, in Daleville, Alabama. His journey into the world of music started when he was in his high school years when he played the principal trumpet in the Sound of the South Marching Band. It was at Troy State University where he honed his musical talents and had the opportunity to study composition under the guidance of Paul Yoder.

Smith’s career in music was nothing short of illustrious. In 1997, he returned to Troy, Alabama, as the Director of Bands at Troy State University, following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Dr. Long. During his four-year tenure at Troy, he directed both the Sound of the South Marching Band and the Symphony Band. Smith’s commitment to music education was evident in his role as an educator, where he not only taught music but also inspired countless students with his passion and expertise.
Smith’s influence extended far beyond the confines of the university. His association with Warner Brothers Publications allowed him to travel the world as a guest conductor and clinician, working with various ensembles, including the New Mexico All-State Small School band.
