How did Rocky Johnson start his Professional Career?

Rocky Johnson commenced his professional wrestling career in Southern Ontario in 1964. His name was formally changed to Rocky Johnson at that time. Rocky Johnson trainer was the esteemed High Chief Peter Maivia, who later became his father-in-law.

His professional wrestling career spanned the globe prior to his affiliation with the National Wrestling Alliance. In the 1970s, he subsequently ascended to prominence within NWA.

Likewise, he has amassed an extensive collection of regional NWA singles and tag team championships. Additionally, under the name Terry Funk and World Championship Harley Race, he engaged in title bouts.

Sadly, neither of them could be dislodged from the NWA World Championship by him. He contested bouts under the Memphis organization alongside Jerry Lawler for a few years and captured Lawler’s title. While donning a disguise, he also competed as Sweet Ebony Diamond in the Mid-Atlantic region.

In 1983, he was an employee of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He subsequently formed a tag team with Tony Atlas. As a consequence of acquiring the moniker The Soul Patrol, they became the first black tag team. On November 15, 1983, the Soul Patrol, also referred to as the Wild Samoans, emerged victorious over Afa and Sika.

Thus, they accomplished a first: they became the first African-American to capture the World Tag Team Championship. However, for six months they were merely a tag team. After Atlas and he were defeated for the championship, he withdrew from the WWE.

In 1991, Rocky Johnson retired from professional wrestling. He subsequently instructed his son Dwayne in grappling. Over time, he established himself as a frequent subject of the camera during his son’s athletic competitions.

Furthermore, he once dove into the arena in order to shield his son from an assailant. He was assaulted at WrestleMania 13 by The Sultan and The Iron Sheik.

However, Rocky Maivia was never spotted on camera, as his WWF persona was a complete failure. He was hired as a trainer for Ohio Valley Wrestling, the developmental territory of the WWE, in 2013. He was subsequently inducted into the 2008 class of the WWE Hall of Fame.

His son, The Rock, and his parents were both inducted into the Hall of Fame on March 29, 2008. As a consequence, he won two NWA Texas Heavyweight Championship titles and three NWA Florida Heavyweight Championships. Likewise, he has been awarded two NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Championships.

He has also achieved the prestigious NWA Brass Knuckles Championship honors once. Both the NWA Florida Television Championship and the NWA Florida Tag Team Championship were bestowed upon him.
