At a young age, he became involved in politics by volunteering for the presidential campaign of US Senator Barry Goldwater in 1964.

He served on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors from 1976 to 1983. Similarly, he was elected Mayor of San Diego in 1983.

After the conclusion of his political career, he resumed anchoring a talk show on AM 1130 KSDO in San Diego. His first program aired from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

In November 2007, he started hosting a nationally syndicated radio talk show from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

Roger left KOGO, the local flagship station, in November 2011 and moved to AM 760 KFMB, the new flagship home radio station.
