Roger Tory Peterson was born in New York on August 28, 1908. Author, artist, ornithologist, and naturalist who inspired the environmental movement of the twentieth century. Peterson’s first work on birds was an article titled “Notes from Field and Study” published in the magazine Bird-Lore in 1925, in which he anecdotally recorded two sight records, a Carolina wren, and a titmouse.
E. T. Seton’s duck diagram served as inspiration (1903). In 1934, he released his seminal Guide to the Birds, the first modern field guide, which sold out its first printing of 2000 copies in one week and went through six editions. Ernest Thompson Seton’s duck diagram in Two Little Savages was one of the inspirations for his field guide (1903).
Wild America was co-written with James Fisher, and he edited or wrote many of the Peterson Field Guide volumes on topics ranging from rocks and minerals to beetles and reptiles. He created the Peterson Identification System and is well-known for the clarity of his field guide illustrations as well as his delineation of relevant field marks.
