Ranga and Sivashanthini “Shanthi” Ranganathan, two Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus, were the parents of Jonathan Romesh Ranganathan when he was born in Crawley, West Sussex, England.

From 1990 to 1992, Romesh attended the independent boys’ school Reigate Grammar School in Reigate, Surrey (now co-ed).

After that, he received his education at Hazelwick School, a state comprehensive school in Crawley, where he was born and raised. The University of London’s Birkbeck College is where he later studied mathematics.

Romesh began by instructing math at Hazelwick School, where he previously attended high school, and The Beacon School in Banstead, Surrey.

While working as a teacher, he started doing stand-up comedy. Romesh also competed in the UK freestyle competition as a freestyle rapper going by the rap moniker “Ranga.”

Romesh, the actor-comedian’s middle name, is well-known. When he initially started school, he only knew that his first name was Jonathan as it appeared on his birth certificate.

Romesh recalled his parents saying they were worried his name would sound too “ethnic” when he applied for employment as an adult during his live act, Irrational.
