After a string of show cancellations at other venues, Roy “Chubby” Brown has been ordered not to perform at a venue operated by the city.
The Durham County Council informed the BBC that the comedian would no longer perform at the Empire Theatre in Consett.
In the past year, some of Brown’s engagements have been canceled, with one council citing incompatibility with its values.
His tour manager described the decision to cancel his performances as “baffling.”
In a social media post, he stated that the comedian, whose actual name is Royston Vasey, had been informed that his show was not in the “vision” for future acts at the Consett Theater.
He stated that as a consequence, the management of the Empire Theatre had decided against a return, following similar decisions by venues such as Workington, Sheffield, and Edinburgh in recent months.
Ritchie Hoyle, Brown’s tour manager, added that he and Brown would “soldier on” and “snowflakes would not bring us down.”
The council verified Brown would not return to the venue, but provided no additional information.
Alison Clark, the company’s director of culture, sport, and tourism, stated,
“We can confirm that we were contacted by Roy Chubby Brown’s tour manager, but there are no plans to book him at Empire Consett.”
Multiple times he had performed at the theater, and in 2013 he asked those who are not offended to “please stay away.”
In September 2021, more than 28,000 individuals signed a petition in response to the cancellation of a similar performance by Sheffield City Trust.
The performance had been scheduled for Sheffield City Hall, but it was canceled after trust chief Andrew Snelling stated that Brown’s content did not reflect the organization’s values.
At the time, Sheffield City Council leader Terry Fox stated that the authority supported the trust’s decision “wholeheartedly.”
In the meantime, Lancaster City Council canceled Brown’s August 2022 performance at The Platform in Morecambe.
Mark Davies, the organization’s chief executive, stated that the organization was “fair, diverse, and inclusive” and that Brown’s performances were not “compatible with these values,” with the council stating that portions of Brown’s actions were “obviously racist, homophobic, and misogynistic.”
It prompted his tour manager to apologize to fans and add, “Woke culture triumphs once more, I’m afraid – the world has gone mad.”
