Royal Edward Dano Sr. was an American character actor who appeared in over 100 films and television shows throughout his four-decade career. He’s most known for his parts in the films “Moby Dick” and “The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao.” In terms of his television career, he was frequently seen as a scary character in a variety of series. His height and build, as well as his deep voice and distinct persona, enabled him to play a wide range of characters. At the age of 12, he ran away from home and lived in various cities before being discovered by his family. His enthusiasm for acting led him to the stage, then to films, and finally to television. He will be remembered forever for his remarkable performances in 1950s western flicks.
Early Life and Bio
Royal Dano was born to Mary Josephine and Caleb Edward Dano on November 16, 1922. His mother was from Ireland. His father worked in a newspaper’s printing department. Royal Dano ran away from home when he was 12 years old and moved around between California, Florida, and Texas until he was discovered. Royal Dano came home with his father and promised to finish his schooling in exchange for the ability to travel. He enrolled in ‘New York University after graduating from high school. He subsequently went on to serve in the United States Army during WWII, rising to the rank of sergeant.
Career
- Royal Dano began his acting career in the hit Broadway musical ‘Finian’s Rainbow,’ where he played a tiny role. In 1949, the New York Critics Circle nominated him for a ‘Promising Actor award for his performance.
- In 1950, he made his film debut in the film ‘Undercover Girl,’ in which he played a tiny role. He played a ‘tattered soldier’ in the theatrical version of ‘The Red Badge of Courage, In 1951.’ The audience was so shocked by his death scene in the play that it was cut from the final version.
- From 1952 to 1953, Dano portrayed Abraham Lincoln in the five-part television episode ‘Mr. Lincoln.’ Alfred Hitchcock’s black comedy ‘The Trouble with Harry,’ in which he performed a brief role as a deputy sheriff, was released in 1955.
- He played Elijah in the 1956 film ‘Moby Dick,’ which went on to become one of his most well-known performances.
- In 1957, Dano played Wilbur English, a meek and timid character in the NBC television series ‘The Restless Gun.’
- In 1960, he had a cameo appearance on the TV series ‘Tate,’ which starred David McLean. On the show ‘Johnny Ringo,’ he also played the role of ‘Lucas Frome’ in the episode ‘Black Harvest.’

Personal & Family Life
Peggy Ranck was Royal Dano’s wife. They had two children together. Royal Dano Jr. and Hutch Dano, his grandson, both followed acting careers.
Dano died of a heart attack after being involved in an automobile accident on May 15th, 1994, at the age of 71. The Los Angeles National Cemetery is where his earthly remains are interred.
