Gay was named to the All-Baltimore Catholic League (All-BCL) first team and co-player of the year by the ‘Baltimore Sun’ during his senior year at Archbishop Spalding.
Rudy chose the University of Connecticut over the University of Maryland to play college basketball, and as a rookie, he averaged 11.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 28.8 minutes in 31 games.
As a sophomore, he averaged 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 30.8 minutes per game for the UConn Huskies in 33 games.
Gay was selected by the Houston Rockets as the eighth pick in the 2006 NBA Draft on April 24, 2006.
Several days later, on July 12, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, where he averaged 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 27 minutes in his rookie season.
