Alexei Anatolievich Navalny is an architect, attorney, and crusader against corruption who leads the Russian opposition. He has organized and run for office in opposition to the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin to bring about reforms against corruption.

Alexei Navalny was a member of the Coordination Council of the Russian Opposition. He is the chief of the Russia of the Future party and the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK).

His contributions to the cause of human rights earned him the Sakharov Prize and Amnesty International classifies him as a prisoner of conscience.

Alexei Navalny and his team, as of 2021, boast a YouTube following exceeding six million. Through these platforms, they have effectively distributed information about corruption in Russia, orchestrated political demonstrations, and promoted their campaigns.

In 2011, during a radio interview, he employed the epithet “party of crooks and thieves” to describe United Russia, the governing party in Russia.

Russian Opposition Leader Arrest Charge

Alexei Navalny was convicted of numerous offenses, including funding extremist activities and establishing an extremist community. As a result, he received a 19-year prison sentence in August.

Already serving an eleven-and-a-half-year sentence in a high-security prison, he was accused of fraud, among other offenses, which he denies.

Vladimir Putin declared his candidacy for a second six-year term in the presidency on Friday; his disappearance now corresponds with the start of the campaign trail.

A Navalny aide, Leonid Volkov, stated on X that the timing was “one hundred percent manual political control directly from the Kremlin; zero percent coincidental.”

Further, he stated, “Putin is fully aware of his principal opponent in these (‘elections’).” In addition, he desires to guarantee the suppression of Navalny’s influence.

There was no immediate statement from the Kremlin. To diminish Navalny’s political significance, both Putin and his spokesman refrain from using his name.

Reportedly, he is treated identically to every other inmate.

On Monday, representatives for detained Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, whose whereabouts are unknown, reported that they have lost contact with him.

Reportedly detained in a penal colony located 150 miles east of Moscow was Navalny.

Alexei Navalny was convicted of numerous offenses, including funding extremist activities and establishing an extremist community. As a result, he received a 19-year prison sentence in August.

Already serving an eleven-and-a-half-year sentence in a high-security prison, he was accused of fraud, among other offenses, which he denies.

Navalny’s detention and imprisonment, according to his supporters, are politically motivated efforts to suppress him from criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Monday on X, spokesman Kira Yarmysh reported that counsel had made numerous attempts to enter the two prison colonies believed to be housing Navalny, who has suffered from serious health issues.

“They were informed that the 47-year-old was not at the IK-6 or IK-7 penal colonies,” Yarmysh continued.

“Neither IK-6 nor IK-7 responded to them on Friday or today,” Yarmysh wrote, adding that Navalny had not been observed or heard from in the past six days.

Formerly, Navalny was a resident of the IK-6 prison colony, situated to the east of Moscow.
