In 2004, Sergel co-wrote and produced the film Belle. Marion Baker, Hope Bernstein, Candice Coke, Goldie Gols, and other stars were filmed by a group of women aged 80 to 93. CUSP, her other film, premiered at New Directors/New Films (MOMA) in 1998. It was broadcast on both PBS and the International Film Channel (IFC).

Her directorial debut, Bruce, premiered at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival in 2000 and was later broadcast on PBS. She is the organizer and chairperson of the Triangle Fire Coalition. It is an organization that was formed to create a permanent memorial to the Triangle Fire victims.

The Coalition has grown into a national network of over 250 members who have organized hundreds of cultural, activist, and artistic events around the world. Since 2004, volunteers have been strewn throughout the city, inscribing the names and ages of Triangle deceased in chalk in front of their old homes.
