Both USA Swimming and the US Olympic Committee (USOC) have imposed a 10-month ban on Ryan Lochte. For lying about being robbed at gunpoint at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the sentence was handed down. The United States of America Swimming laid out punishments in addition to the 10-month suspension (until June 30, 2017) after the decision was made public on September 8, 2016.
The notification states that Lochte has been disqualified from all domestic and international competitions and is no longer eligible to receive a monthly grant from USA Swimming or the USOC. He would also not receive any direct help or have access to the USOC’s training resources.
In addition, he would have to forgo all USA Swimming and USOC medal money from his 2016 Olympic gold medal. In addition, Lochte would be prohibited from taking part in USA Swimming’s annual “Golden Goggles” celebration and would be compelled to perform 20 hours of community service.
He was sentenced along with Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger, and Gunnar Bentz. The others concurred, but he refused since he thought they had done nothing wrong. One of the males then pulled out his rifle and pointed it at Lochte’s forehead.
Then he raised his hands and sat down. According to Lochte, “He [the thief] took our money, my wallet—but he left my cellphone and my credentials.” However, the Brazilian Police quickly confirmed that the story had been fabricated after the interview. “These athletes were not the victims of a robbery.” Fernando Veloso, the chief of the Civil Police, said during a press conference that “they were not victims of what they claimed.”
Veloso claims that CCTV footage captures one swimmer ripping a sign off a wall and throwing it on the ground. Bentz and Conger allegedly told Brazilian authorities that Lochte’s justification was false, according to the A.P. During the competition, two guards pointed weapons at the swimmers. Veloso declined to confirm the story but claimed the guards’ actions were appropriate because the players “were violently conducting themselves.”
