Callis studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in Hammersmith, London, and aspired to be a professional actor. He also had tiny roles in theatre and plays while he was studying. His first notable part was as Adam Benjamin in London’s Burning, followed by Captain Patrick Fleming in Ultimate Force. He also appeared in the medical drama The Royal as Doctor Mike Banner until 2007, and then joined the cast of The Bill.
Aside from television programs, Callis has appeared in films such as Kidulthood, where he played a security guard, Trance, a Spanish TV movie in which he played Nick, Capital Punishment, in which he played Russell Blake, and Shrink, in which he played Max. As the show, The Bill came to an end in 2010, Callis moved on to direct the short film Inside Run. In October 2010, the film was also screened at the BFI London Film Festival.
In May 2011, Callis performed as Stensgard in Henrik Ibsen’s The League of Youth, which opened at Nottingham Playhouse. The next year, he starred in Noel Coward’s comedy Hay Fever. Around the same time, he was cast as Jack Worthing in Nottingham Playhouse’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest. In 2015, Callis created the film Whisper, and in 2019, he played The Tempest and Henry V on stage. In 2021, Sam will appear in re-enactments for the Netflix series The Lost Pirate Kingdom. Derek Jacobi, Evan Milton, and James Wheatley also star in the show.
