Because he “had a day off,” Eurovision contestant Sam Ryder shocked shoppers in the city center with an unexpected performance.

The musician, who is from Maldon, Essex, teased fans on Instagram that he will be in Norwich at lunchtime and asked them where he should perform.

Later, he entertained a joyful gathering in front of The Forum and St. Peter Mancroft church. The 33-year-old, who was busking, jokingly thanked Norwich City Council for not “moving him on.”

Ryder finished second in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, after the Ukrainian Kalush Orchestra. The UK saw its best performance in more than 20 years thanks to his breakthrough with the hit song Space Man.

In his words to BBC Look East,

“That experience, just now, singing with complete strangers on the street, getting to interact with people, it’s absolutely what music is all about.”

“Looking for a shared interest to bridge the gap between you and a stranger.

It was an honor to spend some time with everyone down there. “Find what brings us together rather than what pulls us apart.”

Additionally, he mentioned that he was looking forward to spending Christmas with his family and chatting with his grandfather about flying in a Spitfire.

The singer claimed that during the Spitfire experience, Foo Fighters drummer Roger Taylor and vocalist Dave Grohl left him a missed call requesting him to perform with Queen, which he did at the Taylor Hawkins memorial show.

During the coronavirus lockdowns, Ryder rose to stardom by recreating popular songs on TikTok. He amassed more than 12 million followers and attracted the attention of international celebrities like Justin Bieber and Alicia Keys.

He subsequently signed with the Warner Music Group’s Parlophone record label, where his debut EP, The Sun’s Gonna Rise, was published in 2021.
