Columbia resident Emma Adams, 20, was detained about the incident. On January 13, Adams entered a not-guilty plea to second-degree murder, armed criminal action, tampering with physical evidence, and abandonment of a corpse after initially refusing to show up in court.
Adams’ lawyer, Jeffrey Hilbrenner, requested the judge waive her bond hearing on Tuesday. Adams will show up in court on February 16 for a preliminary hearing and is now being held in the Boone County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bail.
Around 5:30 on January 10, Adams was detained following a health check by the MUPD at a dorm on the MU campus. By court records, a mother asked the police to check on her son, who hadn’t been in contact with her since January 9 about 10:30 p.m.
The male student could not be found, according to the officers. Court records state that the MUPD tracked his movements using security cameras. Around 10:40 p.m. on January 9, the student was seen leaving Hudson Hall and getting into an Uber.
By court records, Uber and a ping from the student’s phone helped officers find a house in the 2400 block of Bentley Court. Adams reportedly permitted officers to investigate the home and backyard, where they found the skeletal remains in a fire pit.

Police said that while searching for a University of Missouri student, they discovered a body on fire behind a house. The inquiry, according to Columbia, Missouri police, resulted in the arrest of Emma Rose Adams, 20, who is accused of second-degree murder.
Officers from the University of Missouri were sent to the Hudson Hall dorm on Tuesday, January 10, to perform a welfare check, according to Columbia Police Sgt. Matt Gremore.
According to KRCG, when the student was not found in his dorm, police found that he had taken an Uber to a residence about 5 miles away in Columbia. Gremore reported finding “unidentified human remains” outside the “suspicious” house.

Second-degree murder, armed criminal action, tampering with tangible evidence, and abandoning a corpse are among the charges brought against the defendant. According to a probable cause statement, Ms. Adams denied knowing the missing pupil when questioned by the police.
She consented to the officers searching her backyard, and they discovered the bones in the fire pit. According to the statement, the suspect responded, “something to the effect of, ‘he was beating me,'” when authorities questioned who was in the fire pit.
She allegedly told police that she stabbed the guy out of self-defense. On a $1 million cash bond, the suspect is being held in the Boone County Jail.
