Sara is not incarcerated right now. She might spend up to 20 years behind bars if the accusations against her are proven true.

In a TED interview, she stated, “I was detained because I was distributing water and blankets and interpreting for the migrants coming every night on the [Lesbos] beach.

She obtained a scholarship to Bard College in Berlin but was unable to go because of her imprisonment.

Even though the lawsuit against her has negatively affected Sara’s mental health, she is still battling.

Sara described what keeps her going during these difficult times to Vogue as “the number of people who banded together and spoke up for me when my freedom was taken away.”

According to sources, Sara was accused of smuggling, forging documents, spying, using radio frequencies illegally, and fraud. Since her incarceration, Sara has been unshakable in her conviction that she is innocent.

They aided those in need at sea as volunteers for a Lesvos-based maritime search and rescue group.

Before being freed on bond in December 2018 while awaiting trial, they had been detained for espionage, human trafficking, and membership in a criminal organization.

In Greece, the trial against her and her crew got under way in November 2021 and is currently going on. In November 2022, she stood before a Greek court to defend her innocence. If found guilty, Sara may spend up to 20 years in jail.

Ever since they were little, Sara and Yusra Mardini have wanted to compete in the Olympics. They believed that migrating to Germany would be their best chance of surviving and achieving their objectives at a time when their lives were at danger due to the Syrian civil war.

From the Turkish shore to the Greek island of Lesbos, they were forced to swim for three hours. Sara’s love of swimming was a big part of her life, but she had to stop because of a shoulder problem.

Sara had given up swimming until Yusra had the chance to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics as a member of the Refugee Olympic Team.

She reportedly decided to abandon her professional swimming career because she was in “physical and emotional pain” as a result of moving to Germany.
