Sarah Polley, a Canadian film director, revealed that her 11-year-old child performed a “cruel” April Fools’ joke on her.
Saturday morning, a letter arrived that said,
“We apologize to inform you that the Oscar you received was given in error.”
Women Talking received the award for best-adapted screenplay at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles last month.
The letter, which was tweeted, requested that she “send it back” to California.
It stated that she might keep the prize for one additional week to “enjoy its presence” in her house.
Yet in the end, it had to be returned so that it could be awarded to the “proper” winner:
“All Quiet on the Western Front.”
“We are sad for your loss, but it is only just that the Oscar goes to the play with the greatest adapted screenplay.”
The child of Sarah Polley joked that Oscar officials realized their mistake on the day the prize was presented, but wanted to avoid another mistake like La La Land being named Best Picture winner in 2017 instead of Moonlight.
Edward Berger, the director of All Quiet on the Western Front, participated in the joke.
“To save on postal expenses as I reside abroad, the Academy has asked me to provide you my address so you may ship the Oscar directly to me,” he tweeted to Polley.
“I will respond shortly. How about you?”
Actress Sarah Polley, who rose to prominence in the 1990s, quickly realized the letter was written by her child as an April Fools’ Day joke.
But, she made it apparent that she was not impressed, stating that her eleven-year-old “swung low” for April Fool’s Day.
The letter stated,
“We feel it is inappropriate that you get this on April 1, as you would likely believe it is a joke. Hence, another letter will be issued to assure you that this is not a joke.”
This is too harsh to be a joke; therefore, we sincerely apologize for any discomfort we may have caused.
