Scott Joplin was born in Linden, TX on November 24, 1868. Known as the King of Ragtime, his “Maple Leaf Rag” was the first official ragtime hit and by far the most influential. His famous opera “Treemonisha” was directed by Robert Shaw, who became the first prominent American conductor to publicly present a mixed-race chorale. He was taught music for free by German-Jewish music professor Julius Weiss after Weiss recognized the family’s extreme poverty and the boy’s unique talent.

Joplin became famous for his ragtime compositions and was dubbed the “King of Ragtime.” During his brief career, he wrote more than 100 original ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. One of his first and most popular pieces, the “Maple Leaf Rag,” became the first and most influential hit of ragtime, and was recognized as an archetypal rag. He left his job as a railroad worker in the late 1880s and traveled the American South as an itinerant musician. He went to Chicago for the World Fair of 1893, which played a major part in making ragtime a national joke by 1897.
