He invested the money by acquiring the second deed of trust for a house mortgage at a 14% interest rate. He worked as a runner for Walter J. Plumb III, a real estate attorney, and investor, while still in college.
He also worked with Plumb on several real estate deals, including the purchase and conversion of a 40-unit apartment building to condominiums, as well as the compilation of dozens of land agreements partitioned into over 3000 lots.
After leaving Plumb, he began constructing retail department shops in Las Vegas, Provo, Utah, and Tempe, Arizona.
