He was raised by a single mother and said that he was unsupervised till the age of 5. He was molested several times when he was a kid and dropped out of school in the 9th grade.

Waltman’s love for wrestling led him to work for local promotions for free, setting up rings and doing other odd jobs for them before taking up wrestling himself. He joined the school wrestling team in ninth grade but quit shortly after. He later started training under the likes of Boris Malenko, Joe Malenko, Masami Soronaka, and Karl Gotch.

In 2008, he attempted suicide after he was overwhelmed with guilt and shame after an altercation with his then-girlfriend, Alicia Webb. Fortunately, Webb found him hanging in their apartment balcony, she was able to revive him as she waited for an ambulance. After this incident, he was checked in the WWE-sponsored rehab and started his recovery.

Waltman began his professional wrestling career in 1993 in the WWF (now WWE). At the time, he was only an enhancement talent, these are the wrestlers that intentionally lose a match to make the other wrestler look powerful. However, after an upset victory against Razor Ramon, Waltman was dubbed the in-ring name, 1-2-3 Kid.

When he was 1-2-3 Kid, Waltman held the WWF Tag Team Championship twice and once challenged Bret Hart for WWF World Heavyweight Championship. His matchup with Bret Hart was ranked the third-best match ever aired on Monday Night Raw.

1-2-3 Kid was part of a backstage faction known as The Kliq, together with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. During the Monday Night Wars, he left WWF to join Kevin Nash and Scott Hall in WCW. He was later released by WCW in 1998 and later re-joined the WWF during its Attitude Era, where he joined D-Generation X as X-Pac.

As a member of D-Generation X, X-Pac held the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship and the WWF European Championship twice. He held the WWF Tag Team Championships two times when he was working with Kane. After leaving WWE, he wrestled a few times in other promotions like TNA and also on the independent circuit before announcing his retirement in 2019.

Despite his ups and downs, Waltman has won a number of championships and honors as a professional wrestler. He is the only wrestler who managed to get hold of the TNA X Division Championship, the WCW Cruiserweight Championship, and the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship.
