Amahle Wheeler (Zoe Saldana) travels to Italy to study and falls in love with Lino, a renowned chef, in the love story (Eugenio Mastrandrea). It will study the beauty of immersing oneself in an entirely different culture, with cuisine serving as a unifying theme.
The film was inspired by Tembi Locke’s memoir From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home. The novel was adapted into a television series by the author and her sister, Attica Locke.
From Scratch also features Danielle Deadwyler, Keith David, Kellita Smith, Judith Scott, Lucia Sardo, Paride Benassi, and Roberta Rigano in various parts. Earlier this month, Netflix debuted a trailer for the series.
The limited Netflix series will premiere on October 21, 2022, at 3 a.m. EDT.
From Scratch: A Cultural Love Story: Trailer
The limited series will tell an international and cross-cultural love story. The series, which has been billed as a love letter from Sicily, will promote the benefits of cultural blending, which has been previously represented poorly in many television partnerships.
The teaser also stated that the program would cover a substantial chunk of Amahle’s life, from the beginning of her relationship until her marriage and childbirth. The From Scratch synopsis is as follows:
“From Scratch” is a cross-cultural love story inspired by the book that follows American student Amahle “Amy” Wheeler (played by Zoe Saldaa) as she meets and falls in love with Sicilian chef Lino.
The summary continues:
“Their quick romance confronts many unforeseen obstacles, including their very different cultural beginnings; true to life, it is also laced with humor and humorous moments that coexist with more serious ones.”
The summary also includes a discussion of the program’s more weighty topics. It is asserted that when Lino experiences “unimaginable health challenges” that threaten the couple’s future, their relatives gather to their aid.
According to the story, this merely demonstrates that “love knows no limitations.” Tembi Locke, the author of the book, and her sister Attica Locke wrote the first and final chapters.
Other show writers include Amy Wang, JJ Braider, Marguerite MacIntyre, Joshua Allen, and Jason Coffey. Nzingha Stewart and Dennie Gordon are the show’s directors.
Locke stated in a 2019 interview about the biography that, after the death of her husband, she conceived the inspiration for the book while in Sicily with her daughter and mother-in-law:
“How did we get here, considering where we started PLUS that the only person connecting us is no longer alive? This question appeared to have been taken from the pages of a book. Naturally, it took me an additional two years to feel prepared to write it. I had to get the confidence to tell the story… “I have something to say, and this is an important story,” Perhaps even more so for women, and possibly even more so for black women.”
The fact that this series is based on actual events guarantees that viewers will find it fascinating. The premiere date for From Scratch on Netflix is October 21, 2022.
