Sergey Lavrov is a Russian diplomat and politician now serving in the United Nations. Previously, he served as Russia’s Foreign Minister, a position he held from 2004. He also served as Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1994 until 2004. He is currently serving his sentence under personal sanctions in the European Union.

His father was born in Tbilisi, Georgian SSR, while his mother was of Russian ancestry. Lavrov received a silver medal for completing his primary schooling at a well-known secondary school.
His favorite lesson since childhood was physics, thus he planned to manage his future career at either the National Research Nuclear University or the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He eventually changed his mind and enrolled in the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where he graduated in 1972. Lavrov studied international relations as a main subject at MGIMO. Lavrov was married by the third year of his schooling.

Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov, Russia’s current ambassador, and politician have been married since 1971. He married Maria Lavrova and they had one kid (a daughter), who is now married and a parent. Their daughter, Ekaterina Sergeyevna Lavrova, used to live in the United States and London while Sergey Lavrov worked at the United Nations. She graduated from Columbia University and has spent a significant amount of time in Russia, although she is not fluent in the language. Their sole kid, a daughter, is married to a Russian businessman named Alexander Vinokurov, who has three children with his wife and has pursued his passion for sports.

Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov graduated from MGIMO in 1972, when it was mandatory for all graduates to serve for the Foreign Ministry for a set period of time. As a result, Lavrov was assigned to the Soviet embassy in Sri Lanka as an advisor. The embassy employed 24 diplomats, and Lavrov was tasked with constantly evaluating the situation in the country. Despite his responsibilities, he also served as a translator, personal secretary, and assistant to Rafiq Nishonov, who subsequently became the Communist Party of Uzbek SSR’s 12th first secretary.
In addition to his hard work and dedication, Lavrov was promoted to the diplomatic status of Attache. Between 1990 and 1992, he served as the director of the Soviet Foreign Ministry’s International Organization. Lavrov extended his Ministry of Foreign Affairs responsibilities until 1994 when he returned to the United Nations as Russia’s permanent representative. He presided over the United Nations Security Council on at least seven occasions, including in June 2003, April 2002, December 2000, October 1999, July 1998, June 1997, and December 1995.
Lavrov was appointed minister of foreign affairs by Russian President Vladimir Putin in March 2004. Later that month, in May 2012, he was reappointed to the government as a foreign minister. Lavrov resigned from his cabinet position in January 2020, following President Vladimir Putin’s presidential address to the Federal Assembly, which included numerous proposed constitutional reforms. Later, Lavrov was appointed to Mikhail Mishustin’s Cabinet.

- In 2022, the University of Troms, Norway, annulled or canceled Lavrov’s honorary doctorate. This occurred as a result of Lavrov’s participation in the war aggression against Ukraine and violation of international law.
- Following the scientific fraudster Jon Sudbo, Lavrov became the second individual whose doctorate was revoked by the university.
