How did Sergio Mattarella start his Professional Career?
In 1983, he joined his father’s Christian Democracy (DC) party, marking the start of his formal political career. Sergio Mattarella was subsequently elected to the Chamber of Deputies. In 1987 and 1989, he applied for minister of legislative affairs and education positions, respectively.
His party was dissolved in 1994 as a consequence of a corruption scandal. Along with other Christian Democrats, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Italian People’s Party (PPI).
Mattarella served as both Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense from 1998 to 2001. Before becoming president of the Italian Republic, he served on the Constitutional Court as a jurist. On February 3, 2015, Sergio took the presidential oath of office.
He resides in the Quirinal Palace, the official residence of the president of Italy. It occupies an area of 110,500 square meters. It is also the ninth-largest palace in the globe in terms of area.
