Shane MacGowan’s Health and Illnesses Prior to Death

Shane MacGowan’s wife and long-term companion Victoria Mary Clarke confirmed his loss at the age of 65 on Thursday in a poignant Instagram post.

The Irish singer-songwriter was recently brought to the hospital after being diagnosed with encephalitis. He is most known for being the main vocalist of The Pogues and the famous song “Fairytale of New York” for the holidays.

MacGowan was hospitalized on December 6, 2022, as a result of an infection. He was diagnosed with viral encephalitis.

MacGowan was limited to a wheelchair after a mishap that happened in the summer of 2015 when he was leaving a studio in Dublin, shattering his pelvis.

MacGowan was known for maintaining poor oral hygiene; in 2008, he lost all of his natural teeth.

In 2015, he had a nine-hour procedure to have a new set of teeth, including one gold tooth, fitted.

These were secured in place in his jaws by eight titanium implants. An hour-long television show called Shane MacGowan: A Wreck Reborn was centered on the process.

“We’ve effectively re-tuned his instrument and that will be an ongoing process,” said the dental surgeon who treated MacGowan, who recorded the majority of his finest works when he still had some teeth.
