Sharon Oster was a professor and administrator at Yale University for 43 years. After graduating from Harvard, she began teaching undergraduate students at Yale College. She became a member of the Yale Economics Department’s faculty. Later the same year, in 1983, she was appointed to the Yale School of Management faculty and given tenure. She was the first woman to be appointed to a tenured position. After then, she was named the Frederic D.Wolfe Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship.
She was a tenured member of the Yale School of Management faculty for over three years, from 2008 to 2011, before retiring in May 2018. During her stay at the Yale School of Management in 2009, Oster accepted a $100,000 wage cut to fund student internships. In 2018, Sharon Oster announced a professorship and an endowed chair in economics. Oster is a published author as well. She is the author of five scholarly works, including Modern Competitive Analysis (1990, updated 1993 and 1999) and Strategic Management of Nonprofits (1995). Oster has also published and disseminated over 400 academic and non-academic papers and articles on topics ranging from applied industrial organization to regulatory problems and labor economics.
