The influential Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King’s political action committee allegedly spent donor money on a $40,000 puppy, according to a recent accusation published on the conservative website Washington Free Beacon.

According to reports, the money was given to a Californian dog breeder. These accusations were made months after King published a Facebook post announcing the birth of the Mastiff puppy named Marz. Then the advertisement was taken down because the dog was purportedly given back to the breeder.
In King’s essay at the time, the dog was referred to as a “new member of the King family.” Also, he stated that Marz will serve as his family’s guard dog.
What particular justifications led to Shaun King buying his dog?
Since last year, the California-based breeder Potrero Performance Dogs has received more than $40,000 from Shaun King’s Grassroots Law PAC, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
The PAC reportedly paid the first $10,000 as a “contractor deposit” in early December, according to Federal Election Commission filings. The data indicates that the second payment, which totaled about $30,650, was processed in February.
Marz had been sent back, according to a Potrero Performance Dogs Instagram post from earlier this month, because he was too energetic to be a home dog. Yet, the account and the post have both been made private and could have been deleted. Unknown as of this writing is if the PAC received a reimbursement upon the dog’s return.
No information is available on Shaun King’s supposed reimbursement of the PAC funds that were allegedly spent. Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists have raised more than $34.5 million since the movement’s inception in 2013. King, who created the Grassroots Law PAC with Lee Merritt, has previously been charged with participating in dishonest fundraising.
Some Twitter users cautioned others from contributing to Shaun King’s PAC after the release of these accusations. A few tweets in the meantime suggested that King might have exaggerated the dog’s price tag of more than $40,000 in order to obtain the funds.
Similar accusations made against Shaun King have already been handled. King addressed these prior accusations in a guest essay for The North Star in 2020. He stated in the piece:
I am essentially the team’s only unpaid worker. I’ve never received payment for it. This year, we nearly raised $1 million, yet I received no pay or stipend of any kind throughout the entire year.
You may check out the FEC reports. Again, our team is occasionally embarrassed by this, but we do it to ensure that the objectivity of our work is never questioned and that I will never be accused of carrying out this task for my own gain. I frequently work first thing in the morning and last thing at night, but I don’t get paid for it.
On the other hand, The Washington Free Beacon asserts that King’s Grassroots Law PAC has contributed “about $56,000 to political candidates since 2021.” Many online commentators have noted that the dog cost more than $40,000 to buy in the interim. Shaun King, Potrero Performance Dogs, and Grassroots Law PAC have not yet made a statement in response to the circumstance.
