Canadian musician Shawn Mendes stated that the breakdown of his relationship with ex-girlfriend Camila Cabello inspired his new single When You’re Gone.
During an interview with Extra, the 23-year-old said that his latest single, which was released on April 1, was written one month after his divorce from Cabello. Mendes asserted that he and the Havana singer have always been writers and that all communication between them has always been transparent.
He also stated that children know and cherish the significance of things. In 2019, Mendes and Cabello shared their first kiss, and they dated for over two years before breaking up in November 2021.

Mendes stated that he began writing When You’re Gone one month following his split with Cabello. The singer stated that he began recalling “so many wonderful moments” and writing about them. Mendes also revealed to Extra that he reached out to Cabello prior to releasing his song.
Since Camila and I have both been writers for as long as we have known each other, we are aware of the implication. And we are aware of its implications. And we shall always be honest with one another.”
The Canadian singer told Extra that “being truthful and vulnerable” is the “only way to connect with actual people in a real sense.”
The Stitches singer also revealed how he is living months after his split from Camila Cabello, revealing that he relies on family and friends for support and meditates to regulate his anxiety.

Camila acknowledged her love for Mendes in March, following the release of her own breakup song. The 25-year-old musician told Apple Music 1’s New Music Daily that he had nothing but love for Shawn.
