The death of tennis player Simon Piacente stunned many people. On January 3, the Western Springs Recreation Department confirmed his death on their Facebook page. Simon handled the Village of Western Springs Recreation Department’s tennis program. He joined Western Springs in 2009 and was appointed director in 2020.
Piacente was a well-liked community member who appealed to individuals of all ages. His tennis sessions, dubbed “Coach Simon’s Adult Tennis Drills,” were popular in the neighborhood. It is unknown what Simon did as a professional tennis player before becoming a tennis teacher. Simon finished 28th in the USTA Men’s Open Singles in Chicago, according to one website.
He was ranked 81st in the Midwest in 2011. After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado, Piacente obtained a USPTA Teaching certification as well as an AEC Fitness certification. According to the website of the Western Springs Recreation Department, the tennis instructor helped build new tennis courts at Spring Rock Park. He wanted the tennis players to have the best experience possible while participating in their sport.

Tributes Are Pouring in for the Beloved Tennis Coach
Following Simon’s passing, a number of the late tennis coach’s friends sent their tributes. Mark Carman, one of his childhood friends, paid tribute on his Facebook page. He displayed photographs from Simon’s 50th birthday celebration and spoke about his incredible life as a musician, novelist, and tennis champion.
“[Simon] was there for me in every way possible,” he stated in an email. You challenged me to be a better person while making me laugh like no one else could. [He] sympathized with outcasts but detested businesses. I can’t tell you how much I’m going to miss my buddy.” Janet Stark, a former student of Simon’s, also took to Facebook to express her condolences.
Simon instructed Janet in 2005, and Janet explained how Simon unexpectedly planned a nocturnal tennis exercise in her essay. Stark also spoke about how she crashed Simon’s 50th birthday party last year and was happy for the chance to meet with him. Simon’s death has left a big vacuum not only in the tennis world, but also in the wider community.
