Born in Santa Maria del Rosario, his father emigrated to the United States during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
When he went to Miami at the age of 11, he was only 11 years old. Later, he established his own family in Virginia, and welcomed Jim and his younger sister Angie.

From broadcasting to CNN
James Madison University granted the 50-year-old a bachelor’s degree in public communication and political science in 1993. Upon completion of his bachelor’s degree, he began working at WMAL-AM radio.
In 1995, he transitioned to television, joining WBIR-TV as a reporter and substitute anchor. Three years later, he began reporting for KTVT-TV, a station owned by CBS, and in 2000, he began reporting for WBEZ-TV.
The native of Virginia began her career in 2001 as a CBS Newspath correspondent before transferring to CBS News in February 2003.
Due to his employment, he went to Atlanta and began contributing to the CBS Evening News with important stories about Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq War from Baghdad, etc.
