Sione was a Liberty standout who helped the team win the CIF North Coast Section Division I state championship in 2017. He amassed 1,214 all-purpose yards as a junior at Liberty, including 809 receiving (12 touchdowns) and 358 rushing (six touchdowns). He also played on the Liberty BVAL championship team in 2018, which finished second in California.

As a senior, Vaki totaled 1,684 all-purpose yards, which included 111 kick returns (one touchdown), 96 punt returns, 75 interception returns, and 43 rushing yards (one touchdown). Last season, Sione started all 14 games as a rookie, tallying 41 tackles and a career-high nine stops against Washington State. This year, Vaki’s responsibilities rose as he began not just as a safety but also as a running back in two games.

Sione Vaki’s forefathers originate from Tonga, a Polynesian country. Piuleini Vaki and the late Oto’ota Vaki had 11 children, including the security guard. Vakis’ mother, Oto’ota Vaki, died in 2016 after a battle with liver cancer. In an interview with 49ers Cal-Hi Sports, Sione stated that he had always been a mama’s boy, and losing her at such a vital moment in his life was traumatic for him and his family.

When asked about his mother’s passing, Sione was upset but mustered a bright grin as he remembered his mother and declared he was her child. The footballer also stated that his mother’s death has expedited his growth and that he will someday meet his mother again.

Piuleini Vaki, Sione’s father, also stated that his mother is always with him in the field. Vaki hasn’t revealed anything about his siblings, except for an Instagram snapshot of them. Piuleini is active on Facebook, where he has shared a few family photos, including a tribute to his late wife.
