Career
A British politician who served in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1644 and again from 1660 to 1675. During the English Civil War, he backed the Royalists.
Sir William Stonhouse, 1st Baronet of Radley, and his wife Elizabeth Powell, daughter of John Powell of Wales, raised Stonhouse. When his elder brother died in 1632, he inherited the Baronetcy.
In 1637, he was appointed High Sheriff of Berkshire, and in April 1640, he was elected as Member of Parliament for Abingdon in the Short Parliament.
In November 1640, he was re-elected for Abingdon in the Long Parliament. Stonhouse remained loyal to King Charles I, attending the Oxford parliament, and was thus barred from the Westminster parliament in January 1644. He was fined for his devotion to the king and ordered to pay the sequestrators £1460 for his estate.
Stonhouse was re-elected as MP for Abingdon in 1660. There was a double vote in the April election, but Stonhouse was declared elected in May. He was a member of the House of Commons until his death in 1675. Stonhouse attempted to deprive his eldest son of the baronetcy by surrendering his father’s patent of creation and having a new one granted by King Charles II in 1670, giving succession to his second son instead. However, it was later determined that a new creation could not displace a previous creation, so his eldest son was able to claim the former title while the second son received the new title. Margaret Lovelace, daughter of Richard Lovelace, 1st Baron Lovelace, married Stonhouse. Their eldest son, George, inherited the first baronetcy, while their second son, John, inherited the second.
