Career
Sir William Whitmore of Apley Hall, Shropshire, and his second wife Dorothy Weld, daughter of John Weld of London, had a son named Whitmore. His father was the High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1620 and the elder brother of Lord Mayor of London Sir George Whitmore (d.1654). Whitmore was elected to the Short Parliament as a Member of Parliament for Bridgnorth in April 1640. He was re-elected to the Long Parliament in November 1640, and he held the seat until 1644 when he was disqualified for supporting the King. On June 28, 1641, he was made a baronet of Apley.
The Parliamentarians under Sir John Price took Whitmore’s house, Apley Hall, in February 1645. Sir Francis Oatley, Mr. Owen, and about sixty men were caught with Whitmore and his aunt. The county’s Sequestration Committee sequestered their estates and moveable land, and they were kept in solitary confinement for a long time. Whitmore died when he was 41 years old. His son William took over the baronetcy after him.
