The 24-year-old figure skater has long been known for her distinctive style on the ice. Hilmer fell in love with ice skating at the age of three and a half. She became interested in the sport after seeing it illustrated in a Muppet book. Hilmer moved to Colorado and trained in Monument with Kori Ade and Rohene Ward, followed by Doug Ladret before joining the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs.
Hilmer is currently coached by Tammy Gambill, Eddie Shipstad, and Sandy Straub, and she skates for the Centennial Skating Club. Sonja competed in her first US Championship in 2022, when she was 23 years old. Later that year, Hilmer won a silver medal at her first international tournament, the Cranberry Cup.
She also set a personal best total score of 177.72 in the Glacier Falls Summer Classic.
