Stan Van began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Vermont. He was named “District 5 Coach of the Year” by the NAIA in Stan Van Gundy 1983. From 1984 to 1985, he led the “Castleton Spartans” to victory in the NAIA’s Mayflower Conference. The Castleton Spartans later won the 1985 NAIA District 5 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Stan did the same thing as an assistant coach at Canisius College in 1987. Later, he rose to become the head coach of the University of Massachusetts Lowell (1988–1992). He worked as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin as well. He was later named head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers in 2994.

Stan worked as an assistant coach for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association for eight years. In the 2003 and 2004 seasons, he oversaw this team’s 42-match winning streak. Stan announced his resignation as head coach of the Miami Heat on December 12, 2005.
