American media sites report that Lance Reddick, an actor in the iconic HBO series The Wire, has died at age 60. Reddick was also well-known for his role as Charon in the John Wick franchise of action-thriller films.
The musician and actor died unexpectedly of natural causes in his Los Angeles home on Friday, according to his publicist.
The publicist told US media that police were called to the actor’s residence at about 09:30 local time (16:30 GMT).
“Lance will be deeply missed,” stated Mia Hansen, Lance’s publicist, in a statement. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.
Reddick was in the midst of a publicity trip for the March 24 release of the fourth installment of the John Wick film series.
In addition, he is scheduled to participate in the next John Wick spinoff Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas.
Reddick, a native of Baltimore, has acted in over a dozen films and television series during the course of his 25-year acting career.
In the John Wick films, he portrayed Charon, the hotel concierge of a New York criminal underground nexus known as The Continental Hotel. He has appeared in the original film, and its two sequels, and is scheduled to appear in the upcoming installment.
The actor was particularly well-known for his breakthrough performance as Baltimore police lieutenant Cedric Daniels in The Wire, a series that aired from 2002 to 2008 and explored the narcotics scene in Baltimore from the perspectives of law enforcement as well as drug traffickers and users.
Reddick told the Guardian in 2010 that he anticipated the show to be a “success,” but he did not expect it to “become this phenomenon.”
The actor appeared in the Netflix series Resident Evil and the science fiction action film Godzilla vs. Kong.
He was also well-known for his voice acting, particularly for the television series Rick and Morty.
Reddick got a bachelor’s degree in classical music from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York before enrolling at the Yale School of Drama.
Together with other cast members, he was nominated for a SAG Award in 2021 for his performance in the film One Night in Miami.
The deceased actor is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and his children, Yvonne Nicole Reddick and Christopher Reddick.
In 2009, Reddick told the Los Angeles Times that he was an “artist at heart.”
“When I got to theatre school, I knew I was at least as brilliant as other students, but because I was a black man and not very attractive, I knew I would have to work my tail off to be the best I could be,” he stated at the time.
Two years have passed since the overdose death of Reddick’s co-star Michael K. Williams, who portrayed Omar on The Wire. Four individuals were charged in 2012 for allegedly selling the drugs that Williams consumed before his death.
