Steve began his television career as a weekend anchorperson at the age of nineteen. He moved to Durham, North Carolina, Providence, Rhode Island, Indianapolis, Indiana, Charleston, South Carolina, and Portland, Oregon after that. Steve joined WSteve Bartelstein-TV in New York City from CNN in Atlanta.

According to the Daily News, Bartelstein was “let go” from WSteve Bartelstein-TV in 2007 after “dozing through a newsbreak he was going to stay.” On September 28, 2007, Cindy Adams of the New York Post revealed that Bartelstein was being treated for testicular cancer.  WCBS-TV announced that it would be shutting down.

On August 12, 2010, he was hired as a morning newscaster for WBBM-TV in Chicago. On July 3, 2011, he announced his departure from WBBM after only 10 months. In addition, Steve desired a change from his work as a sportscaster and newscaster to something more meaningful to him. Baseball was Bartelstein’s favorite sport.
